HORSE OVERVIEW
Can lightning strike twice? A big, imposing colt bred on the same cross that brought you Authentic, the 2020 Kentucky Derby winner and Horse of the Year.
This colt was one of the most impressive physicals in the 2021 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale of Selected Yearlings, and add into the mix that he’s by the most prolific stallion in the industry, Into Mischief, and we knew we were going to give it a strong go to add this colt to our roster. To make things even more exciting, the colt is on the scopier and taller side of the Into Mischief offspring you generally see at the sales. Offspring of Into Mischief come in all shapes and sizes, and excel at all distances and surfaces. However, when looking at Classic two-turn horses this was one of the best we have seen from this stallion, one who looks like he can carry speed to Classic distances. In fact, it’s ironic that this big, scopey Into Mischief colt is bred on the same cross (Into Mischief out of a Grand Slam mare Count to Eleven) as another champion with a similar body type, our 2020 Kentucky Derby winner and Horse of the Year Authentic (Into Mischief-Flawless by Mr. Greeley), with both dam sires being by Gone West.
A number of buyers, including Spendthrift Farm and trainer Brad Cox (who recently formed an ownership group focusing on potential high-end colts), were also very high on the colt and approached us about partnering on the horse. At a select sale there’s often intense competition for the best horses in the sale and partnering gives you a better chance of landing your must-have horses. In the case of this colt, all three partners expected the colt to bring a much higher premium than the final winning bid of $300,000. Of course, by partnering and not bidding against each other, we likely secured quite a nice discount on the colt. We couldn’t be happier to purchase the horse and get him started with Brad next year after the breaking process in Florida this fall and next spring.
Fasig-Tipton Select Six Bonus
This colt comes with a $2 million bonus designed specifically for horses purchased by MRH at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton Sale of Selected Yearlings. If this colt were to win the Kentucky Derby, shareholders would be paid a $2 million bonus (approximately $384/share prior to fees). Unlike some of our past offerings where the bonus was split in partnership with co-owners, this bonus would be paid out only to MRH shareholders.
Breeding Insights
Into Mischief, currently this year’s leading general sire in the Northern Hemisphere, stood the 2021 breeding season at Spendthrift Farm for a stud fee of $225,000 and is one of the world’s most sought-after studs.
A half-brother to champions Beholder and Mendelssohn, Into Mischief began his stud career for a modest cover fee of $12,500, but he quickly established himself as a prominent stallion when his son Goldencents took back-to-back editions of the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and is now himself a successful sire.
Into Mischief progeny come to the racetrack with running on their minds. His offspring include 2018 Florida Derby winner Audible, 2019 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner Covfefe, and 2020 Kentucky Derby winner Authentic and leading three-year old of 2021, Mandaloun.
The Northern Hemisphere’s leading general sire in 2019 and 2020, Into Mischief has seen his progeny earn over $100 million on the racetrack since he entered stud in 2009 and just this year alone, his runners in North America and abroad have racked-up $15 million in purse earnings.
The colt’s dam Count to Eleven has been a very productive broodmare, producing five winners from eight foals of racing age, including stakes placed runners Lily Pod and Holiday Bonus. Grand dam Snit was highly accomplished on the track in banking over $450,000 with a win in the Grade 2 Cotillion and as a broodmare producing the likes of stakes winners and runners Blind Date, Sales Tax, and Bitter Lemon.
