Tufnel Update

Tufnel has remained in good order since his comeback race on February 17th. We did opt to geld him to try to make him the best racehorse possible at this stage. It’s safe to say that stallion possibilities were not a factor in this case so there was no reason not to do the procedure. Given his two races to date, Julie and Kent felt it was the right move and everything went well. Enjoy the video above as our new gelding returned to the track earlier this week.

While he has always been a well-behaved colt, we are at a point where his racing upside is limited if we can not make improvements. While a procedure such as gelding is never taken lightly, this type of situation is one of the more common reasons that owners decide to move forward with gelding. One of the main effects of castrating a horse is to make them a much more relaxed and focused individual. From a timing standpoint, it made the most sense to do it now as he was just returning to the track and movement is a key factor for the recovery process. This shouldn’t set him back much from a training and race schedule.
