HORSE OVERVIEW
An impressive value play. A pedigree with precocity and production, this 2-year-old son of Speightster is out of a stakes-producing female line.
MyRacehorse purchased this colt for $110,000 from the May Midtlantic 2-year-olds in training sale in Maryland after he breezed an eighth of a mile in a very smooth and efficient 10.2 seconds in the under-tack show. Quite frankly, if the colt was by a more commercial and established stallion, we think his purchase price could’ve easily been 5x what the final bid was. His work, productive pedigree, and physical presence upon inspection at the barn hit all of our criteria in looking for quality prospects to add to the stable.
The colt went on with his training in fine order after the sale but after some minor soreness we decided to be conservative and back off on his training and send him to the farm for 60-90 days. The colt progressed well during his time off and is now back in training with Dan Blacker and eyeing a winter 2022 debut.
Update 2/25/22: No Chaser is currently taking a brief respite from breezing and will jog for a month. The colt came out of his most recent work a touch off in his hind end and was given a nerve block to identify the source of lameness. Fortunately, he did not block out and x-rays revealed just a callous on his tibia. Very positive news. Accordingly, we do not expect this to be a significant setback in his training and the colt shouldn’t lose much foundation if at all in the next month.
Breeding Insights
Speightster, who directly descends from the family of the late leading sire Smart Strike, was a winner of 3 of 4 starts, before his career was cut short by an injury. But this son of the exceptional sire Speightstown was quite the standout during his abbreviated racing campaign, which saw him earn the distinction of being recognized as a TDN Rising Star after a stylish win in his career debut. This speedy runner won his first three career starts by a combined margin of 13 lengths, including a 2 1/2-length romp in the Grade 3 Dwyer Stakes at Belmont Park, in which he earned a 104 Beyer Speed Figure.
Prior to his untimely passing in early 2022, Speightster stood alongside his sire Speightstown for a stud fee of $10,000 in 2021.
Speightster sired winners at some of the industry’s biggest tracks including Belmont Park, Saratoga, Gulfstream Park, and Woodbine, and his progeny include stakes winners Door Buster, Dreaming of Drew, and That Kenney Kid.
This colt’s dam, Margarita Friday, was a winner on the racetrack and has produced four winners, including stakes winner Hangover Saturday, who has produced multiple winners. Third dam Desireux is a half-sister to two-time champion sprinter Housebuster.
