HORSE OVERVIEW
Built in value. Filly by Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist and sister to a Graded Stakes winner to be trained by California’s leading trainer Phil D’Amato.
This filly is all quality and class and possesses all the traits one looks for in a big-time prospect. Physically she’s a fluid mover with a great powerful walk, presence, and disposition. She’s built to go a route of ground and her sister is Grade 2 winner Envoutante who has succeeded around two-turns. Physically and pedigree wise we’re thinking of big time races for her down the line.
Our bloodstock team looks to add high quality fillies like this to the MRH stable with a multi-purpose approach. First and foremost, they look for the best physical prospects who give us the best chance to race a sound racehorse. If they are able to match that up in a prospect with a deep successful pedigree, it’s an even bigger boost. Here’s why. At the conclusion of a filly’s racing career they’ll be sold as broodmare prospects. Fillies with more successful pedigrees command greater attention and prices from breeders. Since a filly like this already has ties to a graded stakes winner under her first dam (Envoutante) she’ll retain a portion of her purchase price right off the bat. If she then can be successful on the racetrack and place or win stakes/graded stakes races her value increases dramatically and potentially well above her purchase price.
The filly will receive her initial training in Ocala, Florida in the winter prior to departing to trainer Phil D’Amato’s Southern California barn in the Spring of 2023. D’Amato has become a staple on the Southern California circuit over the past decade and has taken down numerous training titles during that timeframe and has trained the likes of Grade 1 winners Midnight Storm, Bowie’s Hero, Ransom the Moon, Obviously, and Going Global.
Breeding Insights
Sire Nyquist hails from the initial crop of the now wildly successful stallion Uncle Mo. Nyquist became Uncle Mo’s first Classic winner with his victory in the 2016 Kentucky Derby, part of a campaign that earned him $5.1 million on the racetrack. As a 2-year-old, Nyquist took down the championship title after a gritty performance in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile which he won despite a traffic-plagued trip from post 12.
Now in his sixth season at stud, Nyquist’s reputation as a sire is certainly gaining ground on that of his father’s. His first two crops of 2-year-olds thrust him to No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the North American stallion ranks. He currently is positioned as the No. 2 third-crop sire in the country.
Nyquist’s progeny are proven on both dirt and turf, with one of his latest stakes winners, Slow Down Andy, capturing the 2022 Grade 2 Del Mar Derby in his turf debut which followed wins on the dirt in the Grade 3 Sunland Park Derby and Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity. Nyquist’s sons and daughters are also precocious. Slow Down Andy won on debut; the sire’s first millionaire, Vequist, broke her maiden as a 2-year-old in the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes before winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies en route to a juvenile championship title. Another star for this sire, Gretzky the Great, was a three-time winner as a 2-year-old including a victory in the Grade 1 Summer Stakes which led him to a Sovereign Award as Canada’s top juvenile in 2020.
This filly’s dam, Enchante, was a winner at ages 2, 3, and 4 on the track, and also was stakes-placed on several occasions. As a producer, Enchante was quick off the mark with her first foal to reach the races, Envoutante, earning just shy of $1 million during a campaign that saw the filly win the Grade 2 Fall City Stakes at Churchill Downs in back-to-back years as well as emerging victorious in the Grade 3 Remington Oaks and finishing second in the Grade 1 La Troienne Stakes. Envoutante is a daughter of Uncle Mo, so we know that Enchante’s Nyquist filly has been bred on an already very successful family cross. The female line also features the notable mention of the 1987 2-year-old champion Forty Niner, a full brother to the third dam, Abrade.
Update February 27, 2023: Simply Enchanting is being treated for a minor shin splint in which she’ll miss approximately one week of training. At that time she’ll be re-evaluated to resume training which will incorporate light work prior to returning to speed work in about one months’ time.
