HORSE OVERVIEW
Built and bred to run all day. $550,000 daughter of top sire Uncle Mo was second highest filly by the sire sold at the Keeneland September sale.
This was a filly on our list that we just had to come away with from the 2022 Keeneland September Yearling sale. She’s an imposing filly with plenty of size and scope to her in addition to a deep shoulder and lots of leg that have us thinking of Classic distance races in her future. While the hammer dropped at $550,000 on the final bid our team and co-owner Peter Leidel were prepared to go much further to ensure we left the sale with her. She’s by leading sire Uncle Mo who’s the sire of notable colts such as Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist and this year’s Belmont Stakes winner Mo Donegal, but also has sired Grade 1 winning fillies Bast, Dream Tree, and Gomo. This filly is the first foal out of the Medaglia d’Oro mare Knarsdale and physically does carry a lot of resemblance to her broodmare sire. Medaglia d’Oro of course sired the likes of top fillies Songbird, Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra, and Kentucky Oaks winner Plum Pretty.
The filly received her initial training in Ocala, FL at Wavertree Farm and will ship shortly to the Southern California barn of Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert.
Breeding Insights
A son of Indian Charlie, Uncle Mo was crowned the champion 2-year-old colt of 2010 following an undefeated campaign that produced standout performances in his career debut, the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, and Grade 1 Champagne.
As a 3-year-old, he won the Grade 2 Kelso and was a narrowly defeated second in the prestigious Grade 1 King’s Bishop. A nonhereditary liver condition prevented Uncle Mo from competing in the Triple Crown and eventually led to his retirement to the breeding shed in 2012. The colt was an instant hit as a sire.
Uncle Mo’s initial crop was an excellent one and led him to being recognized as North America’s champion freshman sire with a record 25 stakes winners! In just his first crop he produced a Classic winner, Nyquist, the victor of the 2016 Kentucky Derby, a milestone victory for the sire which was preceded by Nyquist’s victory in the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Nyquist is now a top sire himself, with his first two crops of 2-year-olds thrusting him to No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the North American stallion ranks.
Other Grade 1 performers sired by Uncle Mo include Bast, Dream Tree, Mo Donegal, Mo Town, Mo Forza, Outwork, and Unbridled Mo. Through the middle of September of 2022, the sire was represented by 10 stakes winners for the year including his second Classic winner, Mo Donegal, the hero of the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the American Triple Crown.
Uncle Mo progeny are always in hot demand and at the 2022 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, multiple offspring lit up the board with hefty prices including a colt who sold for $850,000 at the first session of the elite sale.
Uncle Mo stood the 2022 breeding season at Coolmore for a fee of $160,000.
This filly’s stakes-placed dam, Knarsdale, was a winner on both dirt and turf and won her career debut at Aqueduct. A daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, a Grade 1 winner at route distances and a prolific sire of more than two dozen Grade 1 winners, Knarsdale went through the auction ring in 2020 at the Keeneland November sale while carrying this filly, her first foal, and sold for $430,000. Knarsdale is among three winners for her mother, Secret File, a winner of multiple races and the runner-up to two-time champion Groupie Doll in the Grade 3 Gardenia Stakes in 2011.
Offering Update 9/27/2023: Seismic Beauty
Seismic Beauty was acquired on 9/13/22 and has been owned by the Series since then. All training and care costs have been billed to the Series. She began her training at Wavertree, and moved to Bob Baffert’s barn in the spring of 2023 where she trained at Los Alamitos, before moving to Santa Anita. In her second work at Santa Anita she did develop a chip in her ankle that was successfully removed by Dr. Ryan Carpenter. She then was on 60 days’ rest at Bradbury Farm before returning to Los Alamitos in September 2023. She is expected to resume training in October and if all continues to go as planned could make her debut in the early part of 2024 at the Santa Anita meet.
Seismic Beauty Update
Seismic Beauty transitioned to an outside stall/pen at Julie Adair-Stack’s farm in Rowland Heights and continues to be hand-walked daily. Julie reported that the daughter of Uncle Mo has been a breeze to deal with and there have been no complications since shipping to her.
