HORSE OVERVIEW
Five New York-bred horses by proven sires such as Liam’s Map, Maclean’s Music, and Freud, plus sires on the rise like Complexity and Volatile. These 5 horses were among a group originally acquired as weanlings by our co-owner Reeves Thoroughbreds, an ownership group with a stellar track record including victories in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Classic with Mucho Macho Man, from which our bloodstock selected five prospects that we felt were the standouts of the bunch.
Five New York-bred horses by proven sires Liam’s Map, Maclean’s Music and Freud, plus promising freshmen Complexity and Volatile. These five horses were among a group originally acquired as weanlings by our co-owner Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, an ownership group with a stellar track record including victory in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Classic with Mucho Macho Man, from which our bloodstock selected five now-two year olds that we felt were the standouts of the bunch.
Our team was drawn to this bundle of horses for several reasons. First, these four colts and one filly are all New York-breds, meaning they are eligible to compete in restricted races with high purses against generally lesser competition than open-company races. The advantages of competing in the New York program are huge and it’s an approach that our co-owner has mastered over the years.
Reeves Thoroughbred Racing has been among the top owners on the NYRA circuit for years and most recently tied for the third slot in 2023 Saratoga standings alongside fellow big names Michael Dubb and St. Elias Stable. Horses campaigned by the Reeves’ either solo or in partnership have amassed close to $25 million in career earnings. Some top Reeves colorbearers who have competed both in and outside of New York include:
Mucho Macho Man (Multiple G1 Winner, including the Breeders’ Cup Classic, $5.6M in earnings)
Channel Maker (Multiple G1 Winner, $3.9M in earnings)
Dr. Schivel by Violence (Multiple G1 Winner, $1.3M in earnings)
City Man (Multiple Graded Stakes Winner, $1.2M in earnings)
Tax (Multiple Graded Stakes Winner, $1.1M in earnings)
Big Invasion (Multiple Graded Stakes Winner, 2nd in 2023 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint)
Sole Volante (Graded Stakes Winner)
Classic Rock, by Maclean’s Music (Graded Stakes Winner)
La Dragontea (GB) (Graded Stakes Winner)
With a stellar proven track record, and a team that has honed its skills in selecting great horses over the years, we’re thrilled to partner with Reeves Thoroughbred Racing on this bundle of horses.
Another perk of this bundle is that it offers instant diversification and an opportunity to increase your odds and action. It’s no secret that racehorses are risky investments, but those risks can be mitigated to an extent with smart choices. Diversification is critical in most facets of life, especially when investing in racehorses. It spreads risk, gives you more opportunities to win, and increases the odds of owning an overall successful stable. This five-horse stable allows owners to enjoy the same strength in numbers that the best in the industry do at just $225/share.
Now, let’s meet your horses:
Liam’s Map–Bitter Lemon Colt
By highly talented runner and established sire Liam’s Map, whose top performers include a quartet of Grade 1 winners as well as Dec. 2’s G3 Go For Wand H. romper Dr B. Reeves Thoroughbred Racing co-campaigns Christophe Clement-trained, stakes-winning New York-bred Silver Skillet (Liam’s Map), who has racked up nearly $300,000 to date. This colt’s MSP dam is out of a Grade 2 winner and a half to another graded stakes winner. Bitter Lemon is by top broodmare sire Lemon Drop Kid, who is responsible for the dams of no fewer than 16 Grade 1 winners. Two Grade 1 winners were full-sisters Forever Unbridled and Unbridled Forever, by Liam’s Map’s sire Unbridled’s Song. This is a strong, medium-sized colt who looks fast.
Complexity–Bares Tripper Colt
Hailing from the first crop of Complexity (Maclean’s Music), who was a romping Saratoga debut winner at two and added the prestigious G1 Champagne next out. He excelled at a mile and was an impressive winner of the G2 Kelso H. as a 4-year-old. Complexity’s yearlings were very well received at auction in 2023, with five youngsters fetching between $300,000 and $400,000. Dam Bares Tripper (Sky Mesa) set a Del Mar track record in her debut at two and added a stakes score two starts later. She has already produced one foal to earn black-type. This Feb. 7 foal is bred on a version of the same cross responsible for Grade 1-winning juvenile and seven-figure seller Varda and active graded stakes-winning millionaire Private Creed. He gives the physical impression of one who should make the races next summer as a 2-year-old.
Maclean’s Music–Downdraft Filly
By the sire responsible for champion sprinter Jackie’s Warrior; G1 Preakness S. hero Cloud Computing; and Grade 1 winners and promising young stallions Complexity and Drain the Clock. The Reeves’ have had excellent recent success campaigning a New York-bred by Maclean’s Music–their Acoustic Ave was a 7 1/4-length debut winner at Saratoga last summer and reeled off three stakes wins that season for the Clement barn. This filly’s dam is by up-and-coming broodmare sire Warrior’s Reward, who was also responsible for the dams of 2022 G1 Champagne S. winner Blazing Sevens as well as Dec. 3’s G1 Matriarch S. heroine Surge Capacity. This Mar. 27 foal is very well-built and athletic-looking.
Freud–Hoopskirt Colt
By perennial leading New York sire Freud, a full-brother to the late, great Giant’s Causeway. Freud has 17 graded stakes winners and 74 stakes winners worldwide to date, including this year’s G1 United Nations S. winner Therapist; and Reeves-owned pair of Dakota Gold, who took the 2021 $500,000 Nownownow S. for trainer Danny Gargan, and Sport Model, a two-time NYSS winner the same year for Christophe Clement. This colt is eligible for lucrative and often not very competitive New York Stallions Series stakes, including a $500,000 event at the end of his juvenile season. His 3-year-old full-sister Orange Freeze took a NYSS race this summer at Saratoga, and the Reeves’ purchased this colt privately after buying his year-older full-brother at auction. This Feb. 22 foal is strong, correct, and balanced and looks like a precocious type.
Volatile–Princess Samurai Colt
From the first crop of highly regarded Volatile (Violence), an $850K yearling himself who was one runner-up finish away from a perfect career, capped by a tally in the 2020 G1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. at the Spa. Volatile’s first yearlings proved popular among both end users and pinhookers, and his top sellers went for $1.15 million, $700,000, and $600,000. This grey colt is out of a stakes-placed, precocious mare whose first foal was a debut winner. As a later foal (Apr. 18), this colt remains a bit immature at this stage, but he has an excellent walk and plenty of upside.
Hoopskirt ’22 Update
Hoopskirt ’22 can be seen doing some light speed work above, covering an 1/8 of a mile in 14.00 flat. The son of Freud is doing a bit less than the others in the bundle due to his brief time off but is now back in the swing of things. Farm trainer Chetley Breeden noted […]
