HORSE OVERVIEW
A daughter of Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist, a leading third-crop sire and a half-sister to a multiple stakes winner, the flashy-looking Mrs Whistler is now in training with fast riser Saffie Joseph Jr. in Florida.
MyRacehorse purchased this daughter of Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist for $80,000 at Day 3 of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s Spring Sale of 2-year-olds in training.
Mrs Whistler looked fabulous in her one-furlong breeze in 10 2/5 at the under-tack show demonstrating a smooth and efficient stride that looks like should carry her a route of ground. Her action and body type reminder our team of one of Tonalist’s best performers to date, Tonalist’s Shape, a Graded Stakes winner for Saffie Joseph.
As with the majority of our two-year old purchases the filly was turned out for 30 days to decompress from the sales process and resumed training shortly thereafter with a goal of debuting in the fall. Unfortunately, Mrs Whistler had a minor setback early on in her training and we gave her approximately 45 days off in the summer to mature. She’s now been in training for a number of months, recently had her first breeze in South Florida and has an eye on a winter 2022 debut.
Breeding Insights
It’s no surprise that Tonalist, the winner of the 2014 Belmont Stakes, has turned out to be a nice stallion. A son of the phenomenal Tapit, the versatile Tonalist was a Grade 1 winner at one mile up to 1 1/2 miles.
A winner of more than $3.6 million in career earnings, Tonalist was ultra-consistent, as evidenced by his record of 7-4-2 in 16 starts. As terrific as his 3-year-old season was with wins in the Belmont Stakes, Peter Pan Stakes, and a victory over older horses in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, Tonalist had a superior and robust 4-year-old campaign as well. That season he raced seven times, and earned a second victory in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, as well as wins in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile and Grade 3 Westchester Stakes.
As a sire, Tonalist was quick to impress with his progeny, firing with first-crop graded stakes winners, Tonalist’s Shape (trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. who will train Mrs Whistler) and Country Grammer.
Other black-type performers included Gale, a 2021 stakes winner, and Tony’s Tapit, Avant Garde, How Ironic, Dack Janiel’s, Alta’s Award, and Shamrocket.
Standing at Lane’s End Farm in Kentucky, Tonalist’s 2021 stud fee is $12,500.
Dam Court Appeal, a winner at 2 and 3 and a daughter of the sensational sire Candy Ride, has produced multiple stakes winner Elle Z, and is a half-sister to three graded stakes winners, including 2-year-old Grade 1 winner Mani Bhavan, a winner of the prestigious Spinaway Stakes as well as the Grade 2 Adirondack Stakes at Saratoga Race Course.
Expected on track: Winter 2022
