HORSE OVERVIEW
From a stakes-producing family with an impressive physical, this filly by perennial leading sire Speightstown (the sire of G1 winners Charlatan and Olympiad) is headed for the New York and Florida circuit! Our bloodstock team was mesmerized by her looks and felt that she had one of the top 3 physicals of the entire sale.
The registered Ontario-bred filly by Speightstown is a favorite of our bloodstock team with a mesmerizing walk to match her statuesque conformation. This filly is by one of the best and most versatile stallions the game in Speightstown, whose 25 Grade 1 winners and counting have accomplished their respective feats over a variety of distances and surfaces. The WinStar resident’s progeny, including no fewer than 138 stakes winners and 65 graded winners, have racked up more than $153 million in purse earnings.
TRAINER OPTIONS
Trainers being considered at this time for Blue Curl ’22 are Christophe Clement and Danny Gargan. Both trainers are East Coast based, carrying strings in New York and Florida, and have had the willingness and success shipping to Woodbine. With her Ontario-bred status, this is something we will almost certainly consider at some point in her career. Our partner Reeves Thoroughbreds has had great success with both of these trainers including BC Turf Sprint contender Big Invasion with Clement and top New York breds Dakota Gold and Ramblin’ Wreck with Gargan. A final decision on a trainer can be expected in Jan/ Feb of 2024 after our team has had a good opportunity to evaluate what program we believe will suit her best.
Breeding Insights
Dam Blue Curl is by another stalwart in two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, one of America’s top stallions who commanded a fee of $225,000 in 2023 and continues to impact the breed mightily both on the track and in the sales ring. Curlin’s daughters are just now getting old enough to have running foals of their own, but he’s already the broodmare sire of seven graded/group winners. That number will no doubt skyrocket in the coming years.
The Speightstown—Curlin cross is also in its infancy, but so far has produced three winners from as many foals to race. Blue Curl is out of the Grade 2 winner Fioretti (Bernardini) and is a product herself of an exceptional cross responsible for Grade 1-winning fillies Clairiere and Paris Lights. Bernardini is one of the most fashionable and coveted broodmare sires of the moment. This is a proverbial “good filly family” with recent Grade 1-winning members of the fairer sex like Fault, Juju’s Map and Bast on the page.
PHYSICAL
Possessing a classy, queen-like presence, the Feb. 12 foal looks a lot like her sire but with more leg and scope than a typical Speightstown. She has a stretchy, ballerina-like walk that matches her impressive physique. We foresee this filly posessing the Speightstown speed with the stamina to go two turns.
Isle Blue Workout Report
Isle Blue breezed a half-mile from the gate yesterday morning over the Oklahoma training track at Saratoga while in company with fellow 2-year-old filly Brindi. The duo was credited with a final time of :50.65. Assistant trainer Miguel Clement provided the video above following the work.
Isle Blue Update
Enjoy the most recent update above on Isle Blue, an exciting daughter by Speightstown. The team at Grade One Investments, Chetley and Nellie, continue to be impressed by this filly as she continues to progress in her speed work. Yesterday, she galloped two laps (one mile and one quarter) on the Two Springs track and […]
