HORSE OVERVIEW
A flashy filly by 2017 Belmont Stakes winner Tapwrit out of a family that flat out throws runners.
MyRacehorse and Starry Night Racing partnered to land this filly by 2017 Belmont Stakes winner Tapwrit after she breezed a furlong in 10.2 seconds at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Two-Year-Olds In Training Sale. Back at the barn she presented herself very professionally with great balance and physique. In the coming weeks she’ll go to trainer Kent Sweezey’s Monmouth Park barn where she’ll begin preparing for a potential race debut later in the fall.
This filly is out of the Distorted Humor mare Moonbow, who has produced four winners to date. Distorted Humor has been the Number 1 active broodmare sire for six years in a row, an angle our team was acutely aware of when evaluating sale prospects.
Alongside our team at the sale was trainer Kent Sweezey, who remarked that this filly is an attractive, well-muscled sort with a pedigree chockfull of runners. He’s excited to get another MRH runner in his barn. Kent joined the MRH team early in 2022, with the arrival of Tap the Gavel into his barn, and the son of Tapit has absolutely flourished under his care, finishing second in his first start for him and then breaking his maiden in his subsequent trip to the starting gate. Kent is very communicative and routinely provides our team with updates and entertaining content for us to share with our owners.
Breeding Insights
Sire Tapwrit checks all the boxes as an up-and-coming sire who is poised for an exciting career while also carrying the promise of becoming the heir apparent to his father, Tapit, a sire of sires whose accomplishments in the breeding shed are legendary as he is North America’s all-time leading stallion by progeny earnings, and even at the age of 21, is still commanding a pricey stud fee of $185,000.
Tapwrit, a stakes winner as a 2-year-old, left his mark on the racetrack as the winner of the 2017 Belmont Stakes, a 1 1/2-mile test of stamina that saw him motor to a two-length victory in the final jewel of the Triple Crown. The following year, after earning $1.3 million on the racetrack, the three-time stakes winner retired to stud at Gainesway in Kentucky, to stand alongside his father to whom he bears a striking physical resemblance. Standing for a fee of $10,000 in 2022, Tapwrit’s first crop are 2-year-olds this year.
Tapwrit’s excellent pedigree extends to his female family as well, with his dam, Appealing Zophie, a Grade 1 winner as a 2-year-old and a multiple graded-stakes producer. As one the best bred sons of Tapit, Tapwrit’s progeny have been very well received in the auction ring, with his sons and daughters routinely bringing top dollar.
This filly’s dam, Moonbow, has a lovely pedigree as well. A daughter of top sire Distorted Humor, Moonbow comes from the family that has generated some serious horsepower with a bounty of black-type (stakes winners) and elite producers, including Dayjur, Gold Beauty, Maplejinsky and Sky Beauty. Moonbow has produced four horses who have reached the winner’s circle, including four-time winner Moon Medal, a winner on debut.
