Classic Cut had his second official gate work on Sunday morning at Oaklawn Park, covering five furlongs in 1:01.80 (32/56). The 3-year-old son of Empire Maker breezed with his regular mate, She’s a Rocket. Trainer Brad Cox reported he has been a touch slow from the gate but has improved overall since being in his barn as a 2-year-old.

Now having his two gate works under him, Classic Cut is getting closer to making his way to the starting gate in the afternoon. The new Oaklawn condition book has a fair amount of race options towards the end of February and early parts of March which could be considered for Classic Cut. Based off our conversation with Brad, it is likely he will start him around two turns which does not come by a surprise given his pedigree but once an actual race target is finalized, we will pass along that information.

Apologies for the missed workout update last week. Following breezing his second half-mile in 49.40 at Oaklawn Park last Sunday, Classic Cut had his first breeze from the gate this morning. The 3-year-old son of Empire Maker worked a half-mile in 48.40 (7/109) while breezing in company with his regular workmate She’s a Rocket. With the weather that moved into the Hot Springs area this afternoon and evening, the Cox team opted to work him back in six days versus in order to work over a better track.

While he still has some way to go from a fitness standpoint, Classic Cut continues to make forward strides in his progression.

With the main track closed yesterday Classic Cut jogged alongside MRH stablemate Iron Works at Silver Springs. The Empire Maker colt is progressing along nicely in his routine, picking up the intensity of training each week.

We are pleased to report that Classic Cut is scheduled to be re-examined by Dr. Wes Sutter next Tuesday and if everything looks good, he can return to light training. We will be sure to issue an update on his examination and when you can expect to see your colt to back under tack.

Please enjoy these photos of Classic Cut being turned out this morning.

The team went to Silver Springs this past weekend and checked up on our boy Classic Cut. Classic Cut seems to be still loving his time turned out and was front and center to greet his visitors.

Classic Cut has been upgraded to a larger turn out paddock and was thrilled to have visitors this morning.

Classic Cut came out of his latest work in good order and overall is doing well in his training. While we believe the 2-year-old son of Empire Maker will be a route horse, like his father who didn’t debut until late October of his juvenile year in a one-mile race, Classic Cut also appears to be a late developer at this time. As a young horse who is going through a growth spurt, there is no rush with getting him to the races. We will let him tell us when he is ready.

He is scheduled to breeze again this weekend and we will report back with a workout report.

Classic Cut worked five furlongs from the Ellis Park starting gate this morning and covered the distance in 1:00.80, which was nearly a full second faster than his work last week from the pole. This was the second time that he worked from the gate for the Brad Cox team. We will report back with commentary from the barn on the colt’s work

Classic Cut had his first five-furlong work at Ellis Park this morning, covering the ground in 1:01.80 seconds. Given this was his first breeze at the distance, a moderate time was to be expected. With juveniles, going from a half-mile to five furlongs is a big step up and a challenge, compared to going from three furlongs to a half-mile. Classic Cut will definitely gain fitness from this morning’s work
