Our accounting and finance team have received final statements and invoices and have reconciled the Carrothers account. We’re just awaiting word from our outside tax advisors on the amount of taxes due on the Carrothers series. We expect to hear back from them within the next week and will issue final distributions and a financial summary of income and expenses at that time.

Carrothers breezed five furlongs over the Palm Meadows turf yesterday morning in 1:05.80 (5/8) in company with Backchat. As you’ll hear trainer Kent Sweezey say in the video above, this work was not meant to be “speedy” but meant to be a learning experience, teaching Carrothers to become more comfortable being behind horses.

He continues to thrive at Palm Meadows, settling in really nicely to his new surroundings. Carrothers will target an allowance race going one mile on the turf at Gulfstream Park on December 3rd, and will be in for a tag of $25,000. Entries are taken on Saturday, November 26th.

Carrothers breezed a half mile in 48.10 (7/43) this morning at Palm Meadows. He breezed solo with blinkers added and worked well according to trainer Kent Sweezey. “He’s done really well since returning to Palm Meadows. We have the ability to take him down the “trail/path”, which helps him relax and keep his fitness better opposed to just jogging,” said Kent.

We will see how he bounces out of this work and begin to look for a race. Turf racing will be returning to Gulfstream beginning Dec. 1st, which will give us the options of both Tapeta or Turf moving ahead.

Carrothers returns to the scene of his latest victory as the 8-5 favorite in Race 7 at Presque Isle Downs tomorrow afternoon.

Your gelding is among a field of 9 competing in this allowance optional claimer (in order to meet the conditions of the race, Carrothers was required to be entered for the $40,000 claiming price). The race will be run at one mile and 70 yards on the all weather surface. Post time is 4:12 p.m. ET.

Trainer Kent Sweezey has reunited Carrothers with Antonio Gallardo, who piloted him to victory at Presque Isle Downs on Sept. 13th. The pairing is significant in that Carrothers can be tricky to ride and it is of benefit to have a jockey that has familiarity and has won aboard him in the saddle. As a horse who likes to run in the clear, his outside post position (9) should allow Gallardo to gauge what his inside rivals do after the break and he can adjust accordingly and, hopefully, put Carrothers in position for smooth sailing.

The 4-year-old’s career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 91, earned when he won on the Tapeta surface at Gulfstream Park earlier this year, is tops in this field.

Best of luck to Carrothers and his partners!

About the Competition (in post position order):

Harrow (10-1) is based at Presque Isle and owns two wins from seven starts on the synthetic surface. A win here might elude the gelding, but he is capable of earning a minor share as he is fairly consistent. A plus is that he will be ridden by the meet’s runaway leader in the standings, Pablo Morales.

Woodchuck (15-1) figures to be a among the early leaders. He’s a winner of 2 races this year, but the waters are a tad deeper here and he’s already been defeated at this condition on two occasions in his most recent starts.

Franz Josef (10-1) is another in here with early speed and enters off a gate-to-wire win in a $25K claimer at tomorrow’s distance. He’s not a horse known for stringing together consecutive victories.

Heirloom Kitten (8-1) tough trip in last when carried five-wide and just missed in a $25K claimer at Presque Isle going a mile. His closing kick could see him along for a share.

Whiskey Double (9-2) lost as the favorite at this condition in his last at Presque Isle, but it was a wide trip that saw him pick up third place. With a better journey, this Into Mischief colt could be a player at the finish.

Colbaloaf (20-1) was not a factor at double-digit odds with Antonio Gallardo aboard while sprinting in his last start in his synthetic debut. His turf form is much better.

A Cotswold Village (6-1) is very consistent at Presque Isle where he has carved out a record of 5-5-3 in 13 starts. He has speed, but looks as if he is better suited to stalking and may be able to get that trip with some speed inside of him. Definitely capable of reaching the winner’s circle.

Goodie Goomer (4-1) seeks his third consecutive win in this spot and his fourth in 2022. Beyers this year for this local runner have been solid. He’s another in here carrying good form and momentum.

After Maryland was pounded with rain yesterday afternoon and through the night, the Maryland Jockey Club decided to take all races off the turf, including stakes. The Japan Turf Cup will now be run on the dirt at 1 ¼ miles. Kent Sweezey was expecting a good amount of scratches and has prepared Carrothers to run on the dirt today. We will continue to update you as the day progresses.

Carrothers has officially been entered in the $100,000 Japan Turf Cup which has been carded as the ninth race at Laurel Park on Saturday, October 1st. Drawing post six of 11, which includes three Main-Track Only entrants, Carrothers will have jockey Victor Carrasco aboard for the first time. With a 90% chance of rain in the forecast due to effects of Hurricane Ian, we will keep you updated as soon as possible on decisions regarding the racing surface and whether or not we will scratch. If you are interested in joining us at Laurel on Saturday, please enter our paddock lottery here.

Carrothers has officially been nominated to the $100,000 Japan Turf Cup at Laurel Park on October 1st. Kent Sweezey feels that the 1 1/2-mile distance will be to Carrothers’ liking and the trainer also likes the convenience of the short ship it will be from New Jersey to Maryland. Kent has secured jockey Victor Carrasco to ride. Entries will be taken one week from today, September 28th.

Carrothers has come out of his recent victory in good order and stepped back on the track at Monmouth Park for a jog this morning.

And looking to make it two victories in one weeks’ time at Presque Isle Downs for the family of Carrothers’, the gelding’s younger half-sister, Aztec Princess, is entered in a maiden special weight on Sept. 20.
