HORSE OVERVIEW
A 3-year-old colt with the potential to build upon his already evident talent; primed to tackle big races for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott.
In March 2020 MyRacehorse and Medallion Racing completed a private purchase of Carrothers, a European import with a deep American pedigree and who is by the young and upcoming sire Mshawish, a son of the remarkably talented sire Medaglia d’Oro. This is what we think could be a Classic type horse, with a proven track record and aspirations of a big US career. Originally purchased in March of 2021, our intentions were to try and get in the Triple Crown series. It was an ambitious goal, but this colt appears loaded with talent. Unfortunately he had a minor set back, so we gave him some time and are now pointing to a four-year old campaign in the handicap division.
Carrothers has already flashed his talent by winning two of three starts in England, and is now pointing to his first start on this side of the Atlantic for his new trainer, Hall of Famer Bill Mott. Carrothers is with Mott’s string in Saratoga and is scheduled to breeze in the coming weeks. If all goes smoothly in the coming months we could see a start at the races in late 2021 or early 2022.
One of the reasons our team identified Carrothers as an excellent candidate for North American racing was based on the fact his two wins came at Southwell, a sand-based synthetic course, which is similar to dirt tracks in this country.
In his latest start on Feb. 2, Carrothers found himself on the outside of the track, on a course that favors inside runners, but still ended as the easiest of winners, under the mildest of urging, charging home to an extremely easy 2 1/2-length victory.
Breeding Insights
On the racetrack, stallion Mshawish was a serious racehorse who collected multiple graded stakes victories and generated career earnings in excess of $2.4 million.
Like his son, Carrothers, Mshawish also began his career successfully aboard, but it was when he became a North American-based runner that his talent was fully realized.
Mshawish holds the distinction of being the only dual Grade 1 winner on dirt and turf sired by Medaglia d’Oro. Included among the many highlights in Mshawish’s career was a victory in the Grade 1 Donn Handicap when he was 6 years old, a performance that was proceeded by a score one month earlier in the Grade 3 Hal’s Hope. As a 5-year-old, he captured the Grade 1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap and earlier in his career, Mshawish was a Group 1 winner in Dubai. A hallmark of his talent was his versatility, which allowed him to post victories over multiple surfaces at distances of 7 1/2 furlongs up to 1 1/8 miles.
Standing stud at Taylor Made Stallions in Kentucky, Mshawish’s first foals are 3-year-olds of 2021. When members of his first crop reached the races last year, the sire enjoyed immediate success. Among his early winners were Arabian Prince and Miss Wild, both of whom won their career debuts, with the former also finishing third in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs.
On the female side of Carrothers family, second dam, Gone Purrfect, is a full sister to champion sprinter and Breeders’ Cup winner Speightstown. Carrothers first dam, Queenofperfection, is an unraced daughter of the late Claiborne stallion Arch, who sired 58 stakes winners before his death three years ago. In addition to Carrothers, Queenofperfection has also produced two other winners from her four foals to reach the races thus far.
Expected on track: Winter 2022
Carrothers Workout Report
Carrothers had his first work back this morning since his race on December 12th. After working a half mile in 50.05 seconds over the Belmont Park training track, Bill Mott’s Belmont-based assistant, Leana Willaford, said that he never came off the bridle, meaning he completed the work with no urging at all. Leana added that […]
Carrothers Update
Carrothers is back training at Belmont Park and doing well since his seventh-place finish on Dec. 12th. Bill Mott said that he was a bit more tired after this race than he was after his U.S. debut, so he gave the colt a couple more days before getting him back to the track. He added […]
Carrothers Race Recap
Following a wide trip today, Carrothers finished seventh at Aqueduct in his dirt debut. Ridden by Eric Cancel, Carrothers raced in fifth position down the backstretch of the one-mile race after breaking from outside post 10. Turning for home, he was seven-wide, but looked like he was going to do some running at the eighth […]
