Carrothers Race Recap
Competing over a sloppy track and stretching out in distance, Carrothers finished fourth in today’s Japan Turf Cup Stakes which was rained off the grass at Laurel Park.
Ridden by Victor Carrasco, Carrothers had a beautiful stalking trip in the 1 1/4-mile race which was originally to be run at 1 1/2 miles on the turf until the remnants of Hurricane Ian dumped plenty of rain on Maryland.
The gelding moved up sweetly around the far turn and Victor said he believed Carrothers was putting himself in position for an exciting finish, but that he got tired in the stretch. Trainer Kent Sweezey said it wasn’t bad effort considering the circumstances of the surface switch. You can hear the interview with both Victor and Kent above.
Carrothers was defeated a total of 13 1/4 lengths by the winner, Armando R, in the 8-horse field.
Kent said that Carrothers came out of the effort well so far and we will check in with the trainer in the coming days to see how the gelding has bounced out of the race and will report back.
