Carrothers Race Overview

Carrothers returns to the scene of his latest victory as the 8-5 favorite in Race 7 at Presque Isle Downs tomorrow afternoon.

Your gelding is among a field of 9 competing in this allowance optional claimer (in order to meet the conditions of the race, Carrothers was required to be entered for the $40,000 claiming price). The race will be run at one mile and 70 yards on the all weather surface. Post time is 4:12 p.m. ET.

Trainer Kent Sweezey has reunited Carrothers with Antonio Gallardo, who piloted him to victory at Presque Isle Downs on Sept. 13th. The pairing is significant in that Carrothers can be tricky to ride and it is of benefit to have a jockey that has familiarity and has won aboard him in the saddle. As a horse who likes to run in the clear, his outside post position (9) should allow Gallardo to gauge what his inside rivals do after the break and he can adjust accordingly and, hopefully, put Carrothers in position for smooth sailing.

The 4-year-old’s career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 91, earned when he won on the Tapeta surface at Gulfstream Park earlier this year, is tops in this field.

About the Competition (in post position order):

Harrow (10-1) is based at Presque Isle and owns two wins from seven starts on the synthetic surface. A win here might elude the gelding, but he is capable of earning a minor share as he is fairly consistent. A plus is that he will be ridden by the meet’s runaway leader in the standings, Pablo Morales.

Woodchuck (15-1) figures to be a among the early leaders. He’s a winner of 2 races this year, but the waters are a tad deeper here and he’s already been defeated at this condition on two occasions in his most recent starts.

Franz Josef (10-1) is another in here with early speed and enters off a gate-to-wire win in a $25K claimer at tomorrow’s distance. He’s not a horse known for stringing together consecutive victories.

Heirloom Kitten (8-1) tough trip in last when carried five-wide and just missed in a $25K claimer at Presque Isle going a mile. His closing kick could see him along for a share.

Whiskey Double (9-2) lost as the favorite at this condition in his last at Presque Isle, but it was a wide trip that saw him pick up third place. With a better journey, this Into Mischief colt could be a player at the finish.

Colbaloaf (20-1) was not a factor at double-digit odds with Antonio Gallardo aboard while sprinting in his last start in his synthetic debut. His turf form is much better.

A Cotswold Village (6-1) is very consistent at Presque Isle where he has carved out a record of 5-5-3 in 13 starts. He has speed, but looks as if he is better suited to stalking and may be able to get that trip with some speed inside of him. Definitely capable of reaching the winner’s circle.

Goodie Goomer (4-1) seeks his third consecutive win in this spot and his fourth in 2022. Beyers this year for this local runner have been solid. He’s another in here carrying good form and momentum.
