HORSE OVERVIEW
Big, strong, and beautiful. This powerful mover was one of the most well-balanced filly prospects our team evaluated at the sale.
MyRacehorse and Spendthrift Farm went to $300,000 to secure one of the most-well balanced prospects in book 2 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The filly has all the necessary components one looks for in a top prospect; absolutely fantastic conformation, great size and scope, a big and fluid stride at the walk, and intelligence.
Obviously, a few other buyers had the same opinion, and after a spirited bidding war between the $200-300k range, we walked away with the filly. We couldn’t see who was bidding against us, but as we were signing the ticket, the underbidder — who happened to be a fellow MRH trainer — came by and congratulated us and said “That wasn’t very nice.” A funny moment for all.
The filly looks the part of a solid prospect that should do her best work routing on the dirt, but has the pedigree that should give her the ability to try the grass as well. Always nice to have options with young prospects.
Pedigree Insights
The filly is sired by 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic Winner Blame, who scored one of the biggest upsets of all in handing the legendary Zenyatta her lone defeat. In addition, Blame also captured the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes and Stephen Foster Handicap in route to banking over $4.3 million in career earnings.
Retired to Claiborne Farm in 2011, Blame carries on a stamina-influencing pedigree through the top side of his pedigree, through his sire Arch, and traces back on both sides through one of the 20th century’s most influential stallion, Northern Dancer. On the bottom side of his pedigree, Blame also inherited speed from the legendary Mr. Prospector, a desirable and potent speed influence.
That balance of stamina and speed has been evidenced through Blame’s best offspring, Grade 1 winners Nadal and Marley’s Freedom. Nadal, the undefeated millionaire and winner of the 2020 Arkansas Derby, was one of the leading contenders in the 2020 Triple Crown series prior to a career-ending injury taking him off the trail. Marley’s Freedom, also a millionaire, won half of her 18 starts including the Grade 1 Ballerina Stakes at Saratoga. Blame has also sired Grade 1 winners Fault and Abscond, the latter showing versatility on the turf.
Blame stood the 2021 breeding season for $30,000 per live foal.
This is the fourth foal of this filly’s mare, Daring Dancer, a Grade 2 winner on the turf for trainer Graham Motion. Daring Dancer is by Empire Maker, a major pedigree influence in his own right. The 2003 Belmont Stakes winner was a perennial leading stallion and is now becoming a leading broodmare stallion in his own right. Empire Maker sired the likes of Bodemeister, Royal Delta, and Pioneerof the Nile.
